Focus on employment generation

The Budget’s thrust on infrastructure investment is laudable, but equally necessary is a sustained focus on employment generation. India’s economy cannot afford any more jobless growth, either in rural or urban areas. Employment generation and economic growth are – or ought to be – two sides of the same coin. Given the size of India’s workforce, the informal nature of its economy, and the limitations of its government, employment generation is not going to be easy. However, it is possibly the single most important ingredient for ensuring sustainable and inclusive socioeconomic growth. Those with the broadest financial shoulders – whether in the public or the private sector – must take responsibility upon themselves to meet the community’s specific requirements. The government can assist by creating an enabling policy environment, wherein productivity, transparency and workplace inclusiveness is emphasised. Technology will have a key role to play in this, and so will the development of an education/training system geared to producing remedies for local issues having employment generating potential. Covid has rendered many Indians jobless and so this is an area needing immediate policy focus.
