An inclusive Digital India

22 NOV,2020 | MEDC

India has now 750 internet connections, of which 700 million are broadband connections. Around 97% of internet connections in India are through mobile phones. All this looks impressive, but for the fact that we are referring only to Digital India. Bharat, accounting for two-thirds of the population, accounts for one-third of the nation’s internet connections. This is an anomaly that must be corrected if the government is serious about inclusive and sustainable economic growth soon becoming a reality. Now that GST has been launched with a digital operating framework, it is all the more necessary to ensure broad-based internet connectivity throughout the country. The pandemic has taught us that much of the future is about working from home, and that will truly benefit the nation only when digital technologies become truly inclusive in their adoption. We need to soon reach a stage when khadi apparel or Gond paintings can find new markets online, as that will benefit innumerable Indians at the bottom of the pyramid.
