In the face of Covid-19, policymakers have a unique chance to reboot the economy emphasizing digitization and productivity. Covid has provided the government a golden opportunity to undertake fundamental structural reform, by tinkering with the system in a manner that would not have been possible under normal This unforeseen crisis has led to much more collaboration between the Centre and the states, and it now seems to be easier to generate political consensus. However, there are some important policy decisions which may need reconsideration. For example, the export ban on onions needs a relook, as it is going to adversely affect many small and marginal farmers in Maharashtra who have already suffered a lot monetarily due to Covid, and are now unfairly expected to hold the financial burden of reining in food inflation. The government’s actions are well-intentioned, but there are still some issues that need smoothing out through wider stakeholder consultations.
