Technology and economic growth

Covid-19 has exposed us to the enabling power of technology. With cheaply available online courses, young graduates and even progressive villagers can train themselves as extension officers and catalyse fresh thinking in rural areas. India has the intellectual capital to fuel its own economic growth … what we lack is a suitable governance framework to ensure the last mile delivery of some important goods and services. Technology can provide that, usually by eliminating the middlemen. By promoting a knowledge culture, people can be empowered with different approaches to self-employment, often discovering cost-effective solutions applicable to the local context. For example, it is unfortunate that horticultural knowledge is scarce and concentrated in a few areas in India. Technology can be a game-changer and help local communities garner information from disparate sources in formulating their indigenous development strategies. In a post-Covid world, things are bound to change, and it is technology that will make the difference.
