Inculcating a scientific temper

23 MAR,2020 | MEDC

With Covid-19 sweeping the globe, some rather misplaced assertions are being made linking India’s current relative health safety from it to our diets or other cultural traditions. We need hard data before making such statements, which are, obviously, playing to the gallery. The inculcation of a genuinely scientific temper remains our best bet today against any natural or manmade disaster. Talk of cheap or traditional medicine against coronavirus is meaningless when there is still no known scientific cure, and there are serious issues about the quality and side-effects of many of the existing treatments. A pandemic is knocking at our doorstep, and that is not the only reason we need to develop a more scientific outlook to life and work. A transition to a rationalist way of thinking will also considerably aid the quality of governance in India and the efficacy of its institutions. At a time when most of the world is moving in the direction of science and logic, India cannot afford to live in a mythical past, propagating half-truths only because they serve vested interests.
