Kerala tops NITI Aayog health index

01 JUL,2019 | MEDC

Kerala secured the top spot in terms of overall performance on the second NITI Aayog health index, while Uttar Pradesh continued to be last. Maharashtra moved up to the third place, behind Andhra Pradesh. The report also showed that Bihar, which saw more than a hundred child deaths due to the encephalitis virus that was blamed on the poor primary health care facilities in the state, continued to remain at the bottom of the list, just like UP. Maharashtra’s performance is encouraging but we still have some distance to cover. There is no reason we cannot consistently obtain the top rank in this vitally important index. The Ministry of Health has decided to link a part of the National Health Mission (NHM) funds to the progress made by states on this index.
