The government of Maharashtra presented a progressive state budget focusing primarily on agriculture, irrigation and infrastructure. Given the agrarian nature of Maharashtra’s economy and the myriad issues facing farmers all over the state, it is good to know that agriculture received priority. A huge allocation of Rs. 8733 crore was made for irrigation, with a focus on Vidarbha and Marathwada, the region of maximum farmer suicides in the state. There were also no new taxes in the budget, and some aspects of the existing value-added tax have been tweaked to provide relief to taxpayers in terms of interest payments and late fees. The thrust on employment generation through the creation of industrial parks is also commendable. All in all, it is a forward-looking budget which will help Maharashtra overcome some key socioeconomic hurdles confronting it today.
